Gadgets

There are so many little extras that can make your stitching more enjoyable. Here a a few of my favorites.  Just click on the item to go directly there.  I've included a picture where possible.

Any suggestions you have should be posted in the Discussion section or sent to me at mail@infostitch.com and I'd be pleased to add them here.

Etui Box

Etui Boxes (Victorian needle boxes) are both useful and decorative.  When you remove the lid, the sides fall displaying the contents. They usually have a central compartment for a thimble or other tiny objects, padded sides for your needles and are large enough to store needlework scissors. They can be purchased either finished or as kits (letting you choose your own fabric).  I buy my kits from from Charted Imagery: chartedx@internorth.com     (picture)

Frames

Frames are used to keep a piece from becoming distorted while stitching. There are various types available, but I prefer a rolling frame, where the canvas is attached on two sides.  These frames can be easily assembled and disassembled for traveling and can be mounted on a lap or floor stand for working at home.  They do have the disadvantage that only a portion of the piece is in view. This is also an advantage as the working surface is smaller than the complete piece.  (picture)

Lights
You certainly need good light to stitch, so a good light in the evening is essential.  I use a small folding  Ott-Lite that provides almost natural lighting. They have a website www.ott-lite.com but are available in many stitching stores.
Magnets

This is possibly the most useful thing I've found - a pair of magnets which sit on either side of my canvas and hold my needle while I'm not using it.  I just toss the needle in the general direction of the magnet and it's there when I need it. I haven't misplaced a needle in ages. (picture)

Needle Cases

Needle cases come in a variety of styles and materials.  Traditionally made of wood, bone or ivory, they have been used by stitchers for hundreds of years.

Needle Grabbers
Everyone's had that frustrating experience of not being able to easily draw your yarn through the canvas.  Needle Grabbers are the perfect thing for these times. They're little circles of textured rubber that firmly hold your needle to pull it through any thickly stitched area or heavy fabric. Available at your local needlework store. (picture)
